Caitlin Clark takes another important step in her second year in the WNBA and A'ja Wilson is already on alert

Caitlin Clark, the point guard for the Indiana Fever, has made a significant impact in her rookie season, earning the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award and positioning herself as a strong candidate for the MVP title in her second season.

In her debut campaign, Clark finished fourth in the MVP voting, behind prominent players such as A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces, who won the award, Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, and Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty.

As of October 10, DraftKings Sportsbook has released its opening odds for next year's MVP race, placing Clark as the second favorite, just behind Wilson.

According to CBS Sports' David Eickholt, Wilson leads with odds of +200, while Clark is a close second at +250.

Clark's rookie year was record-breaking

Clark's first season statistics reflect her extraordinary talent; she averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, as reported by ESPN.

In addition to her impressive scoring, she broke the league's single-season assists record with 337 and set a new single-game record with 19 assists.

Clark's presence has revitalized the Fever, who finished the regular season with a record of 20-20. This achievement marked the first time the franchise reached a .500 record since the 2016 season, when they ended with a 17-17 record.

Notably, that year was the last time the Fever made the playoffs, making Clark's arrival in 2024 a pivotal moment for the team.

As she prepares for her second season, Caitlin Clark's outstanding performance and accolades highlight her potential for future success, both for herself and the Indiana Fever.

Her rivalry with fellow rookie, Angel Reese, will continue in 2025, although there is no expectation that the media pressure on the pair will be as intense.

Their status as warring rookies was dynamite for the media, whereas it seems likely the focus will now turn to Clark's own development as a star, until she faces Reese in the WNBA playoffs at some stage in the future.
