One of the biggest moves of the offseason in the WNBA was Kelsey Plum getting traded from the Las Vegas Aces to the Los Angeles Sparks. An All-Star in each of the past three seasons, Plum helped the Aces lift two WNBA Championships during her time there. But a disappointing end to the Aces' 2024 season had them craving some changes.
It's great news for the Sparks, who were a pitiful 8-32 last season. They needed a completely fresh start, and Plum is the perfect leader to lead them into a new era. Plum has two super talented young players in Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson to help speed up the rebuild. While we still don't know when Brink will be back from injury, Plum is excited for her return.
Kelsey Plum believes Cameron Brink can be WNBA DPOY
Plum was interviewed recently by NBA reporter Mark Medina. The WNBA veteran spoke about many things, but her opinion of Brink spoke volumes.
Cam is awesome. I think she is obviously one of the talents that is going to be great for the organization... A lot of times, I've been hurt before. It's about stacking days in the weight room, in rehab and all of those things. She'll be ready when the time is right. I have all the faith in that.
Plum has extremely high expectations for Brink once she's back. She believes that Brink can be the Defensive Player of the Year. It's not too far-fetched, although it will all depend on how Brink's knee responds.
In 15 games in her rookie season, Brink averaged 2.3 blocks per game. Only A'ja Wilson averaged more last year (2.6). Brink was also averaging 1.1 steals per game, which was tied for 29th in the league but was fourth among centers.
Brink needs time to fill out her lanky frame a bit more, particularly coming from a rehab process, but her presence on the interior makes her a DPOY consideration whenever she's on the court.
