Devin Haney has climbed the boxing ranks to stardom over the past few years, running through the lightweight division and becoming an undisputed champion at 24 years old.
On early Thursday morning, his steady rise took a hit, as the boxer was arrested in Hollywood, California.
What was Haney arrested for?
According to TMZ Sports, Haney was enjoying a night out at Catch L.A. on late Wednesday night. After he left, though, law enforcement officials pulled over the car he was riding in for an "unsafe lane change and a failure to use turn signal".
Haney was not driving the vehicle, and the person who was revealed that they had a a firearm inside the vehicle. Cops searched the car and found a semi-automatic handgun under the driver's seat.
No one took ownership of the gun and since the car was ed under the boxer's name, police had to arrest and book Haney for felony possession of a concealed weapon.
He was released on $35,000 bail and is slated for a court appearance next month.
Suboptimal timing for Haney
This comes within 24 hours of Teofimo Lopez announcing that he was "un-retiring". Lopez is coming off of an impressive performance in which he beat Josh Taylor to capture the WBO welterweight belt.
He had allegedly retired following the victory, but in a rant on Twitter directed at Haney, Lopez confirmed his return with a vengeance.
A fight that's meant to happen
It's clear the two don't like each other and are clamoring for a fight to materialize.
Hopefully, Haney's legal situation doesn't impede a potential showdown between the fighters.
