Francis Ngannou, and Tyson Fury (unintentionally), stunned the boxing world in 2023 when the former UFC champion knocked down the heavyweight champion. While many thought Ngannou should have been awarded the win, Fury ended up squeaking out the split decision victory.

Ngannou rightfully drew praise for his performance, while others were left shocked by Fury's. According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum (in an interview with BoxingScene), Fury underestimated the UFC king.

Usyk says he "loves Tyson Fury" ahead of 2024 boxing showdown

Bob Arum thinks Tyson Fury is in for big test against Usyk

Let's be honest. You watch Fury's last fight with Ngannou, either he really wasn't prepared for that fight, or he's lost a step. When fighters get up in age, that happens. I really believe it's the former - that Fury didn't prepare as well as he should have, who, by the way, has the tools to become a force in the heavyweight division.

Fury's recent resume definitely doesn't lend itself to the idea that he's declining. Before Ngannou, his last four fights all ended in stoppage victories. And his opponents for those fights were Deontay Wilder (twice), Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora. Not easy competition.

Fury is now 35, so his skills will continue to slightly wane, but he's not overly old. And heavyweights tend to be able to fight into their late-30s without a major drop-off.

With a massive battle against Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed titles looming, Fury can't afford to under-prepare again. Arum doesn't believe that will be an issue.

I really believe it's going to be a fascinating fight. Usyk is a very smart fighter. He prepares extremely well. He's fearless. That will be a very big test for Fury. Fury knows that. He's been training assiduously for the fight.

One thing is for sure: fans are in for a spectacle on February 17 when Fury and Usyk face off.
