Artur Beterbiev's highly anticipated undisputed light heavyweight title fight against Dmitry Bivol, set to take place on June 1 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, has been postponed after the former suffered a meniscus injury.
The Russian-born Canadian boxer will undergo knee surgery, keeping him out of action until September.
In search for a replacement
However, fans need not despair as there are plans to ensure Bivol still fights in June. According to a report by ESPN, Saudi adviser and Chairman of General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh, has confirmed that efforts are underway to find a replacement opponent for the 33-year-old Russian.
While the rematch between Bivol and Beterbiev has been pushed back, it has not been canceled. It is expected to be rescheduled later this year, likely in the last quarter of 2024.
Despite this setback, the undercard for the June 1 event promises some electrifying matchups, including Deontay Wilder vs. Zhilei Zhang and Filip Hrgovic vs. Daniel Dubois.
However, the undisputed light heavyweight matchup between Bivol (22-0) and Beterbiev (20-0) was the most anticipated fight on the card, as both fighters are undefeated in their respective careers.
Bivol currently holds the IBO and WBA light heavyweight titles, while Beterbiev possesses the WBC, IBF, and WBO belts.
Beterbiev is known as one of the greatest knockout artists in the division, boasting a 100 percent finish rate. In his most recent fight, he clinched a seventh-round TKO over former WBA and WBC super-middleweight champion, Callum Smith.
