Drake faced yet another substantial gambling loss on Saturday night, betting $565,000 on Tyson Fury to win against Oleksandr Usyk. In a thrilling match held in Saudi Arabia, Usyk emerged victorious by split decision, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years.
With this win, Usyk added Fury's WBC title to his own collection of WBA, IBF, and WBO belts, thanks to a dramatic late rally that included a crucial ninth-round knockdown in a tightly contested battle between the two previously unbeaten heavyweights.
This result was a disappointment for Drake, who had showcased his $565,000 bet on Fury on Instagram earlier in the day. A win for Fury would have netted Drake just over $1 million.
Social media is often abuzz with jokes about the so-called "Drake curse," as the rapper has a track record of losing large wagers on major sporting events.
Previously, Drake lost a significant amount when Anthony Joshua defeated Francis Ngannou by knockout, $700,000 when Dricus Du Plessis beat Sean Strickland at UFC 297, and $550,000 when Israel Adesanya was surprisingly beaten by Strickland. He also lost $890,000 betting on Logan Paul to overcome Dillon Danis in a boxing match.
Usyk beat Fury
The fight saw Usyk start strong, only for Fury to take control in the middle rounds with his trademark confidence and skill. However, Usyk surged in the final rounds, showing his Olympic gold medalist prowess, particularly dominating the eighth and nearly finishing Fury in the ninth.
In the decisive ninth round, Usyk landed a powerful left hand that sent Fury staggering into a corner, earning a knockdown just before the bell.
Fury struggled to regain his footing afterward, and the knockdown proved to be a crucial factor in the split decision that ultimately crowned Usyk the victor.
