- Boxing. The father of boxer Imane Khelif breaks his silence and attacks all his daughter's critics
Imane Khelif has found herself at the center of a media storm this week after her abandoned boxing match against Italy's Angela Carini.
The Italian abandoned the fight very early after receiving a firm punch from the Algerian. She later said that she 'had never been punched like that in her life'.
She has since apologized for refusing to shake Khelif's hand in the aftermath of the fight, but Khelif has been subjected to a torrent of abuse from people claiming that she is actually a man competing in a women's sport.
There was an International Boxing Association (IBA) decision to ban her on the eve of the 2023 World Championships along with another athlete.
The body had subjected her to a test during which the IBA refused to publish results on private medical grounds for the fighters, although it added Khelif and the other athlete, "were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors." Testosterone tests were not conducted.
Khelif competing legally
She and a boxer from Taiwan were cleared to compete at the Olympics given they are both women, but an almighty storm was caused in which disinformation was rife.
American sports journalist Jemele Hill has no sympathy for Carini and thinks that Khelif should be seeking legal action against those who have put her through hell.
"A lot of people need to apologize. I hope Khelif sues some people over their reckless remarks," Hill posted on X.
"All this story did was expose ugliness, hatred, and transphobia. As Carini itted here, she quit because she was upset she was gonna get her ass whooped and other folks turned it into something else."
