The great battle of Las Vegas: Nobody cares about watching the UFC if Canelo fights the same night

Two spectacular evenings to coincide on September 14

If you recall, during UFC 268, Dana White, sitting in a front row seat at Madison Square Garden, was caught watching the Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant fight on a monitor as his own event unfolded. He had wagered $100,000.

Later, during UFC 274 (in Phoenix), the head honcho of the famous MMA promotion itted that he had also turned his attention away from his 'business' to follow the Canelo-Bivol fight, which actually became quite interesting. What White has managed to do to date - perhaps to disguise it - is that his main event fight always starts after the Jalisco champion's when they have coincided.

Once again a Canelo fight will coexist with a big UFC event, but this time is special for several reasons. For starters, it is the case that both parties will coincide in Las Vegas and will present truly spectacular lineups. Suddenly, there's even a battle to see which event will get the most attention on September 14, and which will come out on top on the pay-per-view. According to Dana White, UFC Night (UFC 306), which will take place at the futuristic venue The Sphere, "will be the biggest event in the history of the sport."

It is worth noting that an Alvarez fight has already coincided eight times with UFC events, but only once had they shared date and city. There was no 'conflict', as the Mexican took on Golovkin for the third time while the world's most famous MMA company presented an 'inoffensive' UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs Song.

In any case, Canelo says he is very clear about what the public wants: "Maybe another fighter might care about this [sharing a night with UFC], but I am Canelo. When Canelo fights, people know it's different. Nobody cares about watching the UFC if that same night Canelo fights."

Boxing - Main card (T-Mobile Arena)

  • Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga (WBO, WBA and WBC World Super Middleweight)
  • Erislandy Lara vs Danny Garcia (WBA World Middleweight)
  • Caleb Plant vs Trevor McCumby
  • Rolly Romero vs Manuel Jaimes

UFC 306 - Headliner (The Sphere)

  • Sean O'Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili (bantamweight title)
  • Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko (flyweight title)
  • Brian Ortega vs. Diego Lopes
  • Esteban Ribovics vs. Daniel Zellhuber
  • Ode Osbourne vs. Ronaldo Rodriguez

Both fights, of a very high level, coincide with the Mexican Independence Day weekend, a date always reserved for Canelo. Tickets to see the super middleweight king start at 500 euros and UFC 306 tickets start at just over $3,000. There is no doubt that both events will be sold out... and also that The Sphere will be full of VIP guests. The icing on the cake, in fact, would be the presence of Donald Trump. Of course, it should be noted that in Las Vegas that weekend practically only Spanish will be spoken, just as every time Canelo comes to fight in the 'City of Sin' on the day of a Mexican national holiday.
