Christian Horner claimed to be horrified after Sergio Perez's run in the Mexico GP was unfortunately cut short after he drove through the first corner of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and was forced to leave the Mexican Grand Prix in an anticlimactic exit of the episode where his home country hosted the Formula 1 championship.

Perez wanted to take the lead of the race but was touched by Charles Leclerc, his car lifted him and he fell off the track at the Foro Sol.

For Christian Horner, Red Bull's director, witnessing the event was terrible after Checo Perez lost the upper hand in a crash.

"A great win for Max (Verstappen), unfortunate for Checo in the first corner.... it was horrible to see the car jumping in the air, we tried our best to fix the car but it was impossible, It was one of his best starts, maybe the best of the season, but you can't blame Charles," Red Bull chief told Fox Sports.

More crashes in Mexico GP

Along with Sergio Perez, Haas' Kevin Magnussen crashed into a crash barrier on lap 35 of 71, leaving several pieces of his car on the track.

The Mexican GP authorities decided to apply the red flag and the drivers returned to the pit area due to the extensive damage to the barrier.

When the race was suspended, Max Verstappen was in the lead after overtaking the Ferraris on the opening lap. It was in that battle that Sergio Perez was forced off the track and out of the race.

Behind Verstappen at the time of the red flag was Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton who is in contention for second place with Checo in the 2023 F1 season, and was looking to make the most of Perez scoring no points in Mexico.
