Logan Sargeant's prospects for participating in the Dutch Grand Prix qualifying took a serious hit after a dramatic crash during a rain-soaked FP3 session at Zandvoort. The American driver had been performing impressively, posting the fourth-fastest time on the wet track, when he lost control of his Williams.
Sargeant's car spun out, colliding heavily with the barriers at Turn 3 and then bouncing back onto the circuit.
The incident brought out a red flag as debris from the crash littered the track, forcing other drivers to carefully navigate around the wreckage.
Despite the severity of the crash, Sargeant quickly radioed his team to confirm he was uninjured. He then made a hasty exit from the car as smoke poured from the back, and flames began to consume the rear of the vehicle.
Fellow drivers, including George Russell, Charles Leclerc, and Daniel Ricciardo, expressed concern for Sargeant's safety as they ed the scene, with Russell notably slowing down to signal the need for Sargeant to exit the car quickly.
Fire marshals were on the scene promptly to extinguish the flames, and the damaged Williams was eventually towed back to the pits.
However, the impact of the crash caused significant damage to the car, leading to doubts about whether it can be repaired in time for qualifying. The incident also disrupted the session, cutting into valuable practice time for all drivers in the challenging conditions.
Other incident in practice
Earlier in the session, Nico Hulkenberg encountered his own issues, damaging his front wing after going off at Turn 11.
His Haas teammate, Kevin Magnussen, also ran wide at the same corner but managed to avoid any significant damage.
Russell, too, had an off-track moment at Turn 1 but avoided hitting the barriers.
