Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he's faced lifelong struggles with depression, stemming from the intense pressures of competing at the highest level. The seven-time world champion's battle with mental health began as early as age 13, during his formative years in racing.

Aged 39, Hamilton has taken proactive steps to improve his mental well-being. In 2020, he began waking up at 05:00 to practice meditation, a daily routine that has since become central to his mental health.

To further maintain his inner peace, Hamilton has also participated in silent retreats, allowing him to take a break from the constant noise of racing and fame.

"I think it was the pressure of the racing and struggling at school - the bullying," Hamilton said.

"I had no one to talk to. I'd struggle initially to calm my mind.

"It's a great way of getting in touch with myself, my inner feelings - understanding what I want to do.

"I spoke to one woman years ago - but that wasn't very helpful. I'd like to find someone today."

In addition to meditation, Hamilton clears his head and alleviates stress with regular 10-kilometer runs. This physical outlet has become an important part of his mental health strategy, helping him balance the pressures of racing life.

Ready to start a family

Though currently ranked sixth in the F1 standings, Hamilton's goals extend beyond the track. He recently revealed that while he is single at the moment, he has dreams of starting a family when the time is right.

"I wouldn't be able to do what I do to the level I do it with that," Hamilton told The Sunday Times.

"One of my best friends has just had a kid and I'm seeing how manic it is.

"And my nieces and nephew are a handful.

"There will be a time and a place for it and I can't wait for that part.

"But right now I have some work to do."
