Barcelona and Juventus play each other on Tuesday night in a match that will determine which team finishes top of their Champions League group, but all eyes will be on what could potentially be the final match between two of football's greatest-ever players: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The two superstars were unable to be on the same pitch when the Catalan club visited Turin on Matchday 2 as the Portuguese had tested positive for COVID-19, but they could face off at the Camp Nou on Tuesday if Ronald Koeman and Andrea Pirlo select them.

Messi and Cristiano have been the kings of football for the last 15 years and have broken all sorts of records while winning trophy after trophy. Between them they have 11 Ballon d'Ors and nine Champions League winners' medals, which just goes to show the impact they have had.

In total, the 33-year-old and 35-year-old have met 35 times across club and international football. The record favours Messi, who has 16 wins compared to Cristiano's 10. This just goes to show the way in which one has spurred the other on, although it is true that their dominance has faded slightly in recent years.

Players like Luka Modric and Robert Lewandowski have been able to close the gap to Messi and Cristiano, with the Croatian midfielder even winning the Ballon d'Or in 2018 as he broke the duo's grip on the award. However, despite the fact that there are currently some incredible players in world football, there has not been one who has truly stepped up and taken the mantle from the Argentine and Portuguese.

It seemed like Neymar was going to be the player to pick up the baton. The Brazilian departed Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017 with the hope of escaping Messi's shadow by winning trophies with the French club and being crowned as the best player in the world, but he has failed to make that leap - for sporting reasons but also due to his life off the pitch.

Yet, it remains the case that Neymar is the most likely player to take over from Messi and Cristiano. Antoine Griezmann once said that he was eating at the same table as his current teammate and Tuesday's opponent, but that was more a momentary illusion than a reality. Kylian Mbappe seems like a real possibility to mount a challenge, however he is just 21 years of age and still has some way to go yet.

So, after so many years, Messi and Cristiano are no longer the undoubted kings of football, but nevertheless their presence on the pitch is still often the deciding factor in matches.

"That time when we experienced playing in the same league was very nice," Messi told MARCA shortly after the Portuguese forward departed Real Madrid.

"Cristiano was a great player for LaLiga and for Real Madrid, and battles were very nice. It was a very healthy rivalry in which both of us wanted to improve ourselves day by day in order to give our best."

Cristiano was also very complimentary when discussing Messi.

"Messi is an excellent player who will be ed not only for the Ballon d'Ors he has won, but for always being at the top," he said.

In truth, this has been the best virtue of both Messi and Cristiano. Their constant desire to improve in order to maintain a very high level.

Tuesday night will see them have an opportunity to meet again on the pitch in what could be the final battle between the two kings of football.
