MLS welcomes its 30th franchise, San Diego FC is now official

The MLS officially presented its 30th franchise, San Diego FC is part of the league's successful expansion plans. Tom Penn, who used to be the LAFC CEO, is San Diego's ship captain and who is committing to making the southern California city a soccer venue.

San Diego borders the Mexican city of Tijuana and shares the excitement for the sport, Sandiegans have been traveling to watch Xoloitzcuintles play at Caliente Stadium, the city's local Liga MX team, and have been 'Xolofans' for years so having a local team will make fans happy.

SDFC will debut the 2025 season at Snap Dragon Stadium and will welcome many people to the excitement and cheer for the home team.

The executive explained that the color scheme that will distinguish the new club seeks to reflect the vibrant essence of this city, which represents an entire Californian community. The team will wear chrome and blue kits that represent the Pacific Ocean, which bathes the coasts of San Diego.

"We think we're telling a bit of a complex story here, one that has many layers and is deeply rooted in San Diego. So we expect it will take some time to explain the nuances and the reason behind our brand," the executive explained about the team's logo.

San Diego FC will have as its home Snapdragon Stadium, home of the San Diego State Aztecs, in Mission Valley. Its first official game will be in early 2025 and its board of directors is about to begin the process of building its sports structure, as well as its coaches and players.
