- IndyCar. Indy 500: tire from Kyle Kirkwood accident flies over spectators, strikes car in parking lot
- IndyCar. How much money did Newgarden earn after winning at Indianapolis?
The biggest weekend of the year in IndyCar is here with the jewel of the American single-seater championship: the 500 Miles of Indianapolis.
A race that has as much or more value by itself than the championship and that, as Alex Palou - the only Spaniard in the race - said "winning it separates the drivers from the legends."
The Catalan, reigning IndyCar champion and leader of the 2024 season, is one of the favorites to win, although his odds have dropped since qualifying, held last weekend, in which he could not get into the top 12 that fought for the pole position.
Palou will start 14th, in the middle of the fifth row (in the Indy 500 each row is made up of three cars) and will have to come from behind if he wants to achieve his main goal of the year.
The grid will be historic, because for the second time ever, one team has been able to lock out the front row. Just like in 1988, it is Penske who has achieved it, with Scott McLaughlin on pole, Will Power in second position and Josef Newgarden (who defends the title), third.
Other favorites for the win are Alex Rossi (McLaren), who starts fourth; Pato O'Ward (McLaren), eighth; Takuma Sato (RLLR), 10th; Colton Herta (Andretti), 13th; Alex Palou (Ganassi, 14th) and Scott Dixon (Ganassi), 21st.
But the race will go down in the history books if Helio Castroneves (Meyer Shank) wins the race. The Brazilian achieved his fourth victory in 2021, ing a select club alongside race legends such as AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears. But if he gets his fifth, he will be the only driver in history with such a record.
