Colin Farrell has made the heartfelt decision to place his 21-year-old son, James, in a long-term care facility due to his diagnosis of Angelman syndrome-a rare neurogenetic disorder characterized by developmental delays, speech impairments, motor difficulties, and seizures.
Farrell, who shares James with ex-partner Kim Bordenave, expressed his deep concern about James' future should anything happen to him or Bordenave. Without a structured plan, James could become a ward of the state, potentially losing the familial connection that has been central to his life.
In a candid interview with Candis magazine, Farrell emphasized the importance of proactive planning for James' care. He and Bordenave are actively seeking a facility where they can continue to visit and maintain a close relationship with James, ensuring he leads a fulfilling life surrounded by love and .
"It's tricky - some parents will say, 'I want to take care of my child myself', and I respect that," said Farrell.
"But my horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James' mother, Kim, has a car crash and she's taken too - and then James is on his own?
"We want him to find somewhere where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected."
Launching the Colin Farrell Foundation
Motivated by his experiences, Farrell has established the Colin Farrell Foundation to advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities, particularly as they transition into adulthood.
In many regions, services for children with special needs cease when they turn 21, leaving many young adults without the necessary resources to thrive. The foundation aims to provide education, housing, and workforce to bridge this gap and promote inclusion.
Farrell's commitment to his son's well-being and his efforts to create systemic change reflect a profound dedication to improving the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through the Colin Farrell Foundation, he hopes to inspire a society that treats all individuals with kindness and respect, ensuring that no one is left behind.
