Mexico's Attorney General's Office (FGR) announced on Sunday that it had extradited to the United States a man accused of being the chief bodyguard and liaison in drug trafficking to that country for drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, who is currently in prison.
In a statement, the prosecutor's office said that the subject was handed over for prosecution for his probable responsibility in the crimes of criminal association, against health and using, brandishing and discharging a firearm.
FGR stated that, in compliance with the Extradition Treaty signed between Mexico and the United States, "it extradited to the Government of that country a fugitive of Mexican nationality wanted by the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, United States".
In the report, the name of Jorge 'G' was mentioned, identified by Mexican media as Jorge Ivan Gastelum Avila, alias 'El Cholo Ivan', and who is accused of belonging to a criminal organisation and one of Sinaloa's plaza bosses, as well as being responsible for trafficking various quantities of drugs to the United States.
Gastelum Avila was arrested on 6 January 2016 along with Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, but had avoided being sent to the United States of America through various legal appeals.
The FGR indicated that the delivery of the individual took place on Sunday afternoon at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), to the US agents designated for his transfer to that country.
The extradition agreement between the two countries was signed in 1978, but the first extraditions did not take place until 1995.
