American 'civil rights activist' and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is set to fund the autopsy of a man who mysteriously died in an Atlanta county jail.
Kaepernick will reportedly donate the necessary amount to the family of LaShawn Thompson for an independent autopsy of his body after he was found dead in his cell at Fulton County Jail, Atlanta in September 2022.
The former NFL quarterback, who last played in 2016, ed the family's attorney and pledged to cover the cost of an independent autopsy, as reported by TMZ.
TMZ affirmed that the initial autopsy provided by law enforcement came back inconclusive.
LaShawn Thompson was arrested for a simple battery charge in June 2022 and was placed into the psychiatric wing of the Fulton County Jail.
Inmates exposed to "deplorable" conditions at Atlanta jail
In a brief statement, the family's attorney, Michael Hooper, stated that LaShawn was "eaten alive by insects and bed bugs".
He added that "the cell he was in was not fit for a diseased animal. This is inexcusable, and it's deplorable".
Kaepernick commented on the conditions that inmates were exposed to at the Atlanta jail.
"It's clear to me that it's time, past time, to clean house," said the former NFL star, adding they're making "sweeping changes" to the facility".
The victim's family shared various photos from the scene with the intention of denouncing the hazardous and insanitary conditions of the facility. One showed LaShawn's body covered in beg bites.
