Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May and marks the unofficial start of summer, honors fallen US servicemen and women. Originally called 'Decoration Day', this celebration is a federal holiday on which banks, schools and non-essential government offices will remain closed

While most restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores will be open, so whether you're looking for food or filling a prescription, you'll probably find what you need.

It is one of the 11 federal holidays, since it became official in 1971, but dates back to the time of the end of the Civil War, as a tradition to honor fallen servicemen. The first official celebration took place on May 30, 1868 at the initiative of General John A. Logan, leader of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans

For 2025, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26, although celebrations began on Friday, May 23 and run through Monday

Which offices will be closed on Memorial Day?

The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not operate on Memorial Day and all post offices will be closed. Courier companies such as FedEx and UPS will also not operate

However, services for critical deliveries, such as UPS Custom Critical and FedEx Custom Critical, will be operating

Most banks will be closed on Monday

Some supermarkets will be open, although their operating hours vary: some remain closed, others will have shortened hours and others will have full hours

Government offices, courts and schools are closed.

These are the opening hours of some supermarkets for Memorial Day

  • Walmart: Regular hours from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m
  • Sam's Club: From 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for Plus , from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for Club

  • Publix: Regular hours (pharmacies closed)
  • Albertsons: Regular hours (pharmacies may be closed)

  • Harveys and Winn-Dixie: Regular hours
  • Harris Teeter: Regular hours
  • Giant Eagle, Market District,
  • GetGo: Regular hours (Giant Eagle pharmacies open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
