Will Social Security payments be delayed in June 2025?LAPRESSE

Bad news for s who belong to the Social Security istration (SSA), which announced that some beneficiaries will experience delays in their payments and reductions of up to 15% in their amounts by June 2025, which will affect retirees and people with disabilities who have outstanding federal student loans.

The Treasury Department keeps that 15% thanks to the implementation of the Debt Collection Improvement Act, which automatically withholds part of the monthly check to recover student loan debts in default. The measure will take effect this month and is expected to affect approximately 450,000 people over the age of 62, according to official sources.

Who is affected by the cut and when will they receive their payments?

Some of the groups that will be affected by this reduction are retirees with outstanding student loans, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries with active federal debt, and people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who are under eligibility review. In this case, a beneficiary receiving a $1,976 payment would see a reduction of approximately $296.40.

Regarding the payment schedule for June, the SSA has set the following dates:

  • June 3 for those who began receiving SSI before May 1997 (delayed by weekend)
  • June 12 for people born between the 1st and 10th of any month
  • June 18 for those born between the 11th and 20th (delayed a day due to the federal holiday on June 19)
  • June 25 for those born between the 21st and 31st

How to avoid foreclosure and what to do in case of delays?

However, not all is lost for beneficiaries in this situation and they can avoid this 15% reduction in their payments. Here are some recommendations to help you get rid of it:

  • Pay the outstanding debt or agree on a payment plan with the Department of Education
  • Request a review or exemption if they consider the cut to be inappropriate
  • Use direct deposit as your preferred method of payment
  • Check your My Social Security and postal mail frequently so you don't miss important notifications

If at any time there is an unexpected delay or discount in your , the SSA recommends ing the bank to confirm whether the deposit was processed; you will have to wait three business days to consult with the SSA; and finally, check your online to possible updates on changes in eligibility or withholding.
