If you were waiting for your Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) deposit, known as Food Stamps, and it didn't arrive, you're not alone. There are several reasons why you may have missed your May 2025 benefits, but the good news is that many of them can be resolved.
The most common reason for not receiving your deposit is having had a renewal or semi-annual/interim report process pending and not completing it.
What to do if your May 2025 SNAP deposit did not arrive?
The first thing you need to do is to your state's online benefits portal (such as BenefitsCal in California, Access HRA in New York or YourTexasBenefits in Texas).
Once inside, check the "Notifications" or "Messages" section. You will probably find a letter explaining what happened and telling you what steps to take.
If you find a notification indicating that you did not submit the report or renewal, you may have to resubmit your application. However, some states allow you to submit it late and still recover your benefits.
This is called "reinstatement" and is available in 22 states, including California, New York, and Illinois.
If you have specific questions, it is best to the state or county agency in charge of SNAP benefits directly. If you submitted your renewal on time but still haven't received anything, several scenarios may be occurring:
- Missing the interview: Some renewals require a phone interview. If you did not do this, your case may be incomplete. Check your state's portal or your correspondence for instructions on how to reschedule it.
- Missing documents: It is common for proof of income, household changes or significant expenses such as housing or childcare to be missing. Check to see if you were asked to these documents.
- You are no longer eligible: If you did everything right but still did not receive benefits, it is possible that your current situation no longer meets the program's requirements. Again, there should be a notice explaining why.
- Delays in the process: Many state agencies are experiencing delays due to workload. Although they legally have up to 30 days to process your renewal, in some states it may take longer. If more than 30 days have already ed, call the appropriate agency.
If none of these reasons apply to your situation, you may be facing an unusual case. Sometimes states change the date of the monthly deposit or there are technical problems, and these are the steps to follow:
- Check your online portal and postal mail for any notices
- Call your state or county agency
- a local food bank or community organizations that help with SNAP
- Check Reddit forums to see if others in your state are reporting the same problem
In addition, you can use the Propel app, which is the most recommended to check your EBT balance, view future benefits and keep up to date with notifications. It is available free for Android and iOS.
