Veteran suicides have been rising at an alarming rate in recent years. The latest figures reveal that 6,407 veterans died by suicide in 2022. To combat this crisis, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is allocating $52.5 million in grants to eligible organizations.
According to VA data, most suicide attempts among retired service occur within the first three months of separation, but the risk remains high for years afterward. Since 2001, 140,000 veterans have died by suicide, according to figures from Stop Soldier Suicide.
In a statement released this week, the VA announced that it will award $52.5 million in grants under the Staff Sgt. Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP) to eligible organizations. Below are the criteria for qualification.
Who can apply for the SSG Fox SPGP?
According to the VA's announcement in the Federal , eligible organizations are:
"Incorporated private institutions or foundations for which no part of the net earnings inure to the benefit of any individual, and that have a governing board responsible for the operation of the suicide prevention services provided under the SSG Fox SPGP."
Eligible applicants include corporations wholly owned by private institutions or foundations that meet the criteria above, as well as Indian tribes and community-based organizations.
The primary requirement is that applicants must be able to "effectively network with local civic organizations, regional health systems, and other settings where eligible individuals and their families are likely to have ."
How much funding is available?
Eligible organizations can apply for individual grants of up to $750,000 each. Grant recipients will have the opportunity to renew their grant annually for the duration of the program.
The deadline for submitting applications is July 18 at 4:59 p.m. ET, with recipients scheduled to be announced on September 30.
"Reducing veteran suicide starts by reaching veterans when and how it's most convenient for them. One of the best ways to accomplish this mission is by working with community-based organizations," said VA Secretary Doug Collins. "We look forward to ensuring these funds are put to use helping veterans in need across the nation."
