- Miss Universe. Miss Universe 2023: The message with which Miss Nicaragua won everyone over
Nicaraguan authorities have banned the entry of Karen Celebretti, director of Miss Nicaragua, to the country.
The decision comes after Sheynnis Palacios won Miss Universe 2023 last week in El Salvador.
According to EFE, Celebretti was detained on Thursday along with her daughter at Managua'sAugusto C. Andino International Airport and later deported to Mexico.
In addition, Mexican airline, Aeromexico, reportedly did not inform them by email of the government's decision to deny them entry to Nicaragua until they were already in the country.
This has been happening since 2018 with many Nicaraguans who have expressed their dissatisfaction with Ortega's government, as is the case with Celebretti.
Who is Karen Celebretti?
Celebretti was a finalist in Miss Nicaragua in 1991 and has represented the Miss Universe brand in her country since 2001.
This is not the first time she has been detained for her political stance.
On March 16, 2019, she was detained along with other critics and opponents of Ortega as they demanded the release of political prisoners in the Nicaraguan capital.
For her part, Nicaraguan Vice President and wife of Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo, sharply criticized the Miss Universe victory for, according to her, turning it into "destructive coup-mongering":
"In these hours and days of new victories, we see the gross exploitation, and the crude and evil terrorist communication, that seeks to turn a beautiful and well-deserved moment of pride and celebration into destructive coup-mongering."
What will happen to Sheynnis Palacios?
As the reigning Miss Universe, Sheynnis Palacios will have to spend a year in New York, to fulfill several commitments as the most beautiful woman on the planet.
Since she is directly tied to Celebretti, it is not known if Palacios will be able to return to her country as of 2025.
If we take into that just on Tuesday, authorities in Nicaragua prevented two visual artists from painting a mural in her honor, it does not seem that this could be possible in the medium to long term.
