One of the most anticipated holidays for couples is approaching: Valentine's Day.
This date is the annual fixed celebration of love and friendship, marked by cute couples, enthusiastic elementary school students sending cards to each other, and of course, critics who mock its commercialisation.
And this year, the celebration coincides with Ash Wednesday, the solemn day of fasting and reflection that marks the beginning of Christianity's most religious season.
How did Valentine's Day come about?
The origin of the story of the character of Valentine is not as romantic as one might think. The young priest lived in 3rd century Rome under Emperor Claudius II the Gothic, who enacted a law banning young men from marrying so they could the army, according to National Geographic.
In defiance of this law, Valentine decided to challenge the emperor's ban and began secretly arranging marriages between young lovers.
He was subsequently caught and was arrested and confined in a dungeon, where he remained imprisoned, and on 14 February 269 he was stoned and beheaded.
According to legend, Valentine was in love with a girl called Julia, to whom he sent a farewell note in which he signed: "From your Valentine", which would give rise to the Anglo-Saxon phrase used to sign love letters: "From your Valentine".
