A transgender woman was brutally murdered and dismembered last weekend in a coastal town in Thailand. The lifeless body of 25-year-old Woranun Pannacha was found in the early hours of Saturday morning in a rental room in Pattaya, a popular tourist destination in the country.
The main suspect is a 42-year-old Chinese tourist who was detained at Bangkok airport while trying to leave the country. The man had visible marks of a struggle, including scratches on his face, which may have been caused during a confrontation with the victim.
The events allegedly began when the suspect met the victim on the beach on Friday and proposed sexual intercourse in exchange for money. They both went to the room where the encounter took place, but once there, the young woman allegedly rejected the proposal, which triggered a violent argument.
The situation led to an act of extreme violence that ended the young woman's life. The police searched the room after being alerted by a housekeeper hours later, according to the local newspaper Pattaya Mail, found the young woman's body in the bathroom, in a pool of blood and with deep stab wounds. Officers then found that the young woman's heart had been removed, which was found next to the body, and that she was missing a lung.
After being arrested, the Chinese tourist confessed to the crime, itting that he wanted to open the victim's body to extract her organs. He also revealed his intention to manipulate the corpse. Security cameras caught the man buying large scissors and plastic at a nearby hardware store before the incident.
This gruesome murder has reignited the debate about the situation of sex workers and transgender people in Thailand, a country where prostitution is illegal and these groups face frequent abuse and violence.
