One of the few elements capable of facing the age of time is art. Regardless of the form, art always endures and impresses future generations. A recent discovery in Greece confirms this, after an investigation led to several life-size marble statues hidden in a sculptor's workshop.
The researchers date this place to the Hellenistic period. They only became aware of it 45 years ago, in the 1980s, when they found several incomplete marble statues in the same area. Little by little, and based on suspicions about the presence of these figures, they discovered that they had dug right into the area where a sculptor's workshop was located.
The latest discovery in Greece: a sculpture workshop hidden beneath 5th century BC lands
Beyond the marble statues, which were the most striking, there were also eating and drinking vessels from the Classical period (5th and 4th centuries BC), so they believe that several people also lived in this place. Research closer to the time has discovered that it was a complex with different well-defined areas.
Marble sculptures of Aphrodite, clay heads of female figures, marble waste and unfinished statues, clay moulds, metal slag, seals and pigments have been found. Thus, the researchers say that this place was used for other craft activities and not only as a sculpture workshop.
In the latest excavation, an 'androna', known to be a space in Greek houses designated exclusively for men, was also discovered. All these findings were made in Paros (Greece) and have been collected by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
