Former rivals David "Big Papi" Ortiz and Derek Jeter are now teammates on Fox, but that didn't stop the Boston Red Sox legend from pranking his New York Yankees counterpart with a special gift during the latter's debut as an MLB analyst.
Jeter, 48, opened the wrapped box to find a custom Red Sox jersey with his last name. He instantly tossed the gift and joked about quitting the show.
"It's been a great time spending time with you guys here," Jeter joked. "You won't see me anymore. This is my last day at Fox."
Alex Rodriguez became an MLB analyst at Fox two years ago and his former Yankees teammate has now ed him, a full-circle moment for their love-hate relationship.
Ortiz, 47, also gave Jeter another gift, this time one he appreciated, a gold crown to make "El Capitan" the king.
Epic Red Sox-Yankees rivalry revived
The three from the epic Red Sox-Yankees rivalry of the early 2000s proved on their first day that it'll be great television.
They are reviving the rivalry in a new setting and Red Sox have the upper hand after day one, but the Yankees legends will likely respond.
New York held the upper hand for most of the 1990s and 2000s, including a victory in the first postseason series between the two teams in 1999 en route to the World Series title. Boston, however, made its mark in the 2004 ALCS, becoming the first team to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the postseason. Boston would go on to win the World Series, the first of Ortiz's three titles.
Jeter's debut as an analyst was Saturday afternoon during the Chicago Cubs' 9-1 beatdown of the St. Louis Cardinals from England.
