MLB continues to try to clean up the league from the sports betting epidemic they are in. There were already several players who were suspended for being involved in these acts, even with punishments of being banned for life from the Major Leagues.
Now, in addition to the players, it seems that the umpires are also involved in these events. MLB recently issued a statement suspending Pat Hoberg, one of the best umpires in the league, for being involved in sports betting, and all the fans are concerned.
"During this year's Spring Training, MLB began an investigation into a possible violation of MLB sports betting policies by umpire Pat Hoberg," reads part of the statement issued by MLB.
"Hoberg was removed from the activity during the investigation. Although it found no evidence that the games worked by Hoberg were manipulated, the MLB determined that the suspension is justified. Hoberg has decided to appeal the sanction and we cannot comment further until that process is concluded," the text concludes.
The appeal will take a few days to be evaluated
Commissioner Rob Manfred will hear the umpire's appeal. If Hoberg is found guilty of betting on MLB games, he would be violating Major League Rule 21 and will be banned for one season.
However, if it is concluded that the umpire bet on games in which he participated, the sanction would be for life, just as happened recently with the Venezuelan baseball player Tucupita Marcano.
Hoberg has been a Major League umpire since 2017 and is considered one of the best at his job. Even in 2022 he was tasked with being behind the plate in a World Series game.
