Disaster struck early Tuesday morning in the Dominican Republic, when the roof of a nightclub collapsed during a concert. Several people were killed and many others were injured or are missing in the rubble. Information continues to come out as the destruction is sifted through.
One of the people that was killed was former MLB relief pitcher Octavio Dotel. Initially reported as being pulled from the rubble alive, it was confirmed shortly after that he ed away from his injuries. He was 51 years old.
Octavio Dotel played for 13 teams throughout impressive MLB career
Dotel was a journeyman in MLB. He was one of the more reliable relief pitchers of his generation despite never making an All-Star Game. He played for 13 different teams, and won the World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011.
Throughout his MLB career, Dotel earned $40.8 million. Dotel started his career with the Houston Astros, then made the majority of his money in his early to mid 30s. From 2007 to 2009, he earned $16 million over three seasons from the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox.
His final contract came with the Detroit Tigers at the age of 39. He retired shortly after. He finished his career with a 59-50 record, 3.78 ERA and 109 saves.
Dotel returned to his native country of Dominican Republic following his retirement, where he was involved in business ventures as well as community work.
