- MLB. Juan Soto has not agreed to any contract, despite rumors
- MLB. The Yankees are already preparing for the possibility of losing Juan Soto in free agency
All eyes in the MLB world are focused on Juan Soto and where the star outfielder will land for the foreseeable future.
Many believe that the 26-year-old will land a contract worth over $600 million, something that most of the teams in the league can't offer.
Thus, with the list of potential suitors slimmed down, the latest reports suggest it's a battle between the two New York teams: the Mets and the Yankees.
The Yankees are said to have improved their offer in a bid to keep the left-hander in the Bronx. Last season he hit 35 home runs, drove in 109 runs and drew 132 walks with a league-best .432 on-base percentage.
Mets still the favourites?
Despite the improved offer, a recent Baseball Insiders video on Youtube featuring Robert Murray suggests it's the Mets who lead the race for Soto's signature.
"I do think that Mets are the team to beat for Soto," Murray said. "Their ability to win, their ability to compete for a World Series, as well as the owner, Steve Cohen, who can outbid anybody, makes them the team to beat."
With the Mets organization seemingly committed to winning, it makes the race between the two city rivals that much more intriguing. Although the Yankees have explored moves for pitchers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, it's believed they are just contingency plans should Soto sign elsewhere.
As for the other teams in the mix, the Dodgers have plenty of resources, though they recently locked up starting pitcher Blake Snell to a big deal.
The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays are also seen as dark-horses to land Soto. A move to either side would come as a huge blow to the Yankees.
