Paul Skenes has everything he needs to become a Major League Baseball star in the future, but the Pittsburgh Pirates rookie itted he is still learning how to control his emotions.
The Pittsburgh Pirates made a refreshingly honest assessment about his character immediately after their compelling contest against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Even a dominant seven-inning display couldn't give the 22-year-old the escape he needed after itting he struggles to cope with the feeling of frustration on the field.
"I get frustrated sometimes. I don't know that I do avoid frustration," Skenes said.
Skenes recovers from pitch to show his good side
Skenes managed to channel his emotions into his game and delivered another stellar performance for the Pirates, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out eight.
He featured in one of the highlights of the game when Yandy Diaz smashed a home run off Skenes' first pitch. The ball hurtled toward the right field foul pole, seemingly destined to land there, but it clipped the pole to bank a homer for the Rays.
However, Skenes wasn't bitter about the slice of good fortune that went against him and instead sent his congratulations to Diaz.
"I saw it up in the air, and I was like, 'There's no way,' because I didn't think he hit it very hard," he recounted. "I kind of just laughed when I saw it hit the foul pole. I was like, 'Good for you.'"
The Pirates succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in the end, but Skenes' performance was a clear positive to take away, given that the 22-year-old is still in his first season in the MLB.
Even if he has trouble keeping his emotions under the surface in baseball, Skenes' life away from the mound is certainly heating up.
