The Pittsburgh Pirates crushed the New York Mets by a score of 14-2 in an MLB game that stood out not only for its overwhelming score, but also for the number of home runs that triggered an unusual situation at PNC Park, they sold out the fireworks.

The Pirates announced the shortfall during the eighth inning, having scored 14 unanswered runs after the Mets took an early 2-0 lead. The seven home runs came courtesy of Rowdy Tellez (twice), Jack Suwinski, Bryan Reynolds (twice), Yasmani Grandal and Michael A. Taylor. Both Tellez's and Reynolds' second home runs were grand slams.

But the real story was the Pirates starting pitcher. It was a fun day for Pirates fans, who witnessed another brilliant performance from rookie sensation Paul Skenes. The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, two walks and striking out eight batters and managed to make history.

The important milestone in his career

Paul Skenes has recorded seven or more strikeouts in nine of his 10 appearances, all this has set an MLB record for the most strikeouts within a pitcher's first 10 career outings. The 22-year-old pitcher from Fullerton, California, struck out eight batters in seven innings while giving up only two runs and four hits during the Pirates' win. Skenes is now 5-0 with a 2.12 ERA so far on the season. He also has 78 total strikeouts and has pitched seven innings in nine of his 10 starts.

Three of the home runs came against Mets starter Luis Severino, and another three came against reliever Ty Adcock, who entered the game in the eighth inning with his team already trailing 8-2.

Adcock, who had a 3.38 ERA before the game, saw his ERA increase to 14.54 after this game. His FIP, which uses home runs allowed as an important part of its formula, also reflected a performance well below his standard at 15.16.

The victory raises the Pirates' record to 42-45, putting them four games behind the last wild card spot in the National League.
