The Boston Red Sox have taken a crucial step to enhance their bullpen, reportedly g veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman to a one-year, 10.75-million-dollar deal, pending a physical.

The addition aligns with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow's focus on increasing bullpen velocity this offseason.

Known for his electrifying fastball, which reached 105 mph in 2024 and averaged just under 99 mph, Chapman remains one of baseball's most intimidating pitchers. His exceptional velocity contributed to a 37.1 percent strikeout rate last season, ranking in MLB's 99th percentile.

Despite his dominance, control issues have plagued the 36-year-old throughout his career, with a 14.4 percent walk rate last season among the league's highest. Nevertheless, Chapman's mix of a power sinker and slider, with whiff rates of 32 percent and 31 percent, respectively, bolsters his versatility.

Chapman's role with the Red Sox is yet to be determined, but he offers a valuable left-handed option, which the team lacked in 2024. With Liam Hendriks returning from Tommy John surgery and Justin Slaten coming off a strong rookie season, manager Alex Cora will have multiple closing and setup options heading into Spring Training.

Is Chapman a worthwhile g?

The Red Sox bullpen has seen significant turnover, with former closer Kenley Jansen and reliever Chris Martin expected to leave in free agency. Chapman fills a critical gap as a seasoned left-handed arm and brings a wealth of experience, including his 335 career saves and seven All-Star appearances.

Since defecting from Cuba in 2009 and debuting with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010, Chapman has built an impressive résumé. Over six seasons with the Reds, he tallied 146 saves and a 2.17 ERA. His career has included key stints with the Yankees, Cubs, Royals, and Pirates. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the Chicago Cubs' historic 2016 World Series victory.

In 2024, Chapman struck out 98 batters over 61 2/3 innings with the Pirates, holding opponents to a .165 expected batting average, another mark in the 99th percentile.

As the Red Sox pursue other high-profile moves, such as their reported interest in free agent outfielder Juan Soto, Chapman's g underscores their commitment to reinforcing the bullpen. With his veteran presence and elite velocity, the Red Sox are taking a critical step toward shaping a competitive roster for 2025.
