Dylan Cease pitched the second no-hitter in San Diego Padres history, shutting out the Washington Nationals 3-0 to complete the sweep of the series. It is the second 'no-no' of 2024, after Ronel Blanco did it with the Astros against Toronto.

A no hitter with an unusual start, since the first 9 minutes of the game were played right before there was a rain delay. It resumed with the Padres having the bases loaded and a short fly ball to left field by Ha-Seong Kim produced the only three runs of the game before Cease even began his work.

The right-hander took the mound at Nationals Park and remained unstoppable. For the third consecutive start, he allowed 1 hit or less, something not seen in the Major Leagues since at least 1901 and finished his first game without allowing a hit or a run.

A historic afternoon in the nation's capital

The Padres starter's only sins were three walks, one in the first, which prevented any approach to a perfect game, one in the fourth again to Lane Thomas, and one in the seventh. He finished the game with 114 pitches and 9 strikeouts.

The interesting thing about the game was that after Cease finished the seventh inning, manager Mike Shildt wanted to remove his starting pitcher from the game after reaching the 94-pitch count. Cease seemed surprised of this and fellow starting pitcher Joe Musgrove talked Schildt into leaving Dylan Cease in the ball game. After that happened, the former Chicago White Sox player retired the rest of the batters he faced.

The San Diego Padres had only one no-hitter in their history, moving out of a tie with Colorado, Tampa Bay and Toronto at the bottom of this Major League Baseball list. The previous one was from Joe Musgrove on April 9, 2021 against the Texas Rangers.
