Max Scherzer's much-anticipated debut with the Toronto Blue Jays was cut short on Saturday after the star pitcher exited the game against the Baltimore Orioles due to right lat soreness. The 40-year-old was pulled after pitching three innings and throwing 45 pitches, well short of the 80 pitches originally planned, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

Scherzer's outing got off to a challenging start, allowing two home runs in the first inning. The Orioles' Colton Cowser sent a 91.6 mph fastball into center field on Scherzer's second pitch of the day, and Jordan Westburg followed with another homer off an 84 mph slider, marking a rocky opening. However, Scherzer quickly composed himself, striking out one batter before his early exit. The game was tied 2-2 when he left.

This is not the first time Scherzer has faced injury concerns leading into a season. During spring training, he dealt with lingering right thumb soreness, an issue he said dates back to 2023. Scherzer previously noted the link between thumb health and overall arm stability, warning that pitching with thumb discomfort could lead to more severe shoulder injuries. This same thumb issue had been connected to the teres major strain that sidelined him late in the 2023 season with the Texas Rangers, Matheson reported.

The options for Toronto

The Blue Jays' coaching staff will now be tasked with evaluating Scherzer's condition and determining the next steps. Should Scherzer miss time, Yariel Rodríguez could be tapped to fill his spot in the rotation. The team had high hopes for Scherzer's impact this season after g him during the offseason to strengthen the rotation, especially in what could be a pivotal year for franchise stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.

Despite his early exit, Scherzer's presence on the mound remains a key factor in Toronto's bid to contend in a competitive division. Fans and team officials alike will await updates on his condition, hoping for a quick recovery to ensure the ace can contribute to the Blue Jays' playoff aspirations.

The Orioles ultimately secured a win, adding to the disappointment of Scherzer's abbreviated debut. As the Blue Jays look ahead, they'll be closely monitoring the health of their star pitcher, whose leadership and experience are central to their season ambitions.
