The 2016 Olympics may have just drawn to a close, but Spanish weightlifter Lidia Valentin is set to receive a London 2012 gold medal and a Beijing 2008 silver after the athletes who placed ahead of her tested positive for banned substances.
The 31-year-old finished fifth and fourth in 2008 and 2012 respectively, but will now see her name retrospectively added to the medal tally after competitors who finished ahead of her were caught doping.
The Associated Press reports that eight weightlifting medallists at Beijing 2008, including three champions, have tested positive.
The trio of Chinese gold medallists, Cao Lei, Liu Chunhong and Chen Xiexia, were found to have used GHRP-2, a substance that stimulates the production of growth hormones.
The International Weightlifting Federation has announced that the athletes will all be suspended until their cases are resolved.
While this development is a regrettable one for the sport of weightlifting, it offers a silver lining for Lidia Valentin, who will now add silver and gold medals to the bronze she won in the Rio Olympics 75kg category.
