In the technical and strategic battle, the one who came from behind and surprised everyone triumphed. Oliwer Rowland won from fourth place and after spending half the race lurking in the battle for the podium and victory just ahead of him. Wehrlein, who was the favourite, was again left without victory for the second consecutive race and Da Costa, who played with his teammate, gave in to the final push of the Nissan driver. The close race to the end was the British driver's first win of the year and the Japanese manufacturer's first win of the year.
Although Porsche did not win, it managed to get its two drivers on the podium with Da Costa in second place and Wehrlein in third. Da Costa took advantage of his "attack mode" to take the lead and take the lead away from his teammate. Werhlein fought hard to hold off Dennis, who came on strong with his Andretti and upset the order of the grid in the early stages. Dennis finished fourth ahead of Vergne, but was left without a podium finish and caused Wehrlein's energy to wear out, somehow falling into his trap.
Providential yellow flag
With Rowland battling Da Costa, a yellow flag came out in the final moments which was perfect for him to hold on to the lead. Da Costa gave it his all until the end, twisting the car and trying to cut centimetres off the track, but Rowland arrived asking for the time, although he was the first to cross the finish line.
It was a show of courage, daring and cleverness on the track that made the Foro Sol roar every time the drivers approached separated by just a few centimeters. The victory could have gone to any of the three, but the closeness of the championship and the cars meant that the final lead, the safety car and Rowland's gamble to be first in the final stages paid off and was the winning bet.
Da Costa, leader of the championship
Da Costa leads the World Championship after two consecutive podium finishes and two second places. He is being the most consistent driver and this makes him leave Mexico with the first position in a brilliant start to the championship. "This is the mentality I have for this season, to be there, to be consistent, it's the first podium I share with my teammate since I ed Porsche and I celebrate it with the team. Being leader doesn't mean much now, I have to see if the safety car favoured Rowland a lot, but I'm happy in general," said Da Costa celebrating with an enthusiastic crowd.
The next race will be on February 14 at the Jeddah circuit in Saudi Arabia.
