Hours after breaking her own American record in the 50 butterfly and becoming the second fastest swimmer of all time in that event, with 24.93, Gretchen Walsh jumped into the pool at the Pro Series in Fort Lauderdale and set a new world record in the 100 butterfly... in the preliminaries.
The American swam the distance in 55.09, a time that improves on the55.18 she set at the US trials in June last year. On Thursday,Walsh had broken the 53.00 barrier in the 100 freestyle for the first time, becoming the fifth fastest American in history in that event.
Walsh made her Olympic debut in Paris, with two gold and two silver medals, including the Olympic runner-up in the 100m butterfly behind compatriot Torri Huske.
In December, at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest, she was the star of the show, with seven gold medals and 11 world records.
