23XI Racing, co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan, has ed forces with Front Row Motorsports to file an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and its CEO, Jim .

Why is Jordan's team suing NASCAR?

The lawsuit, which could have significant implications for the future of the sport, comes on the heels of devastating damage left by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, where Jordan's team has played an active role in relief efforts.

The lawsuit claims that NASCAR operates in a monopolistic fashion, restricting the ability of teams to compete fairly.

Among the issues raised, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports take aim at the sport's exclusive agreements with premier racetracks and mandatory reliance on NASCAR-chosen suppliers for parts.

According to the plaintiffs, these practices prevent teams from maximizing their profitability and growth potential.

"Together, we brought this antitrust case so that racing can thrive and become a more competitive and fair sport in ways that will benefit teams, drivers, sponsors, and, most importantly, fans," the teams said in a t statement.

Jordan, known for his competitive spirit, echoed the sentiment in his personal remarks.

"Today's action shows I'm willing to fight for a competitive market where everyone wins,"Jordan stated.

"Everyone knows that I have always been a fierce competitor, and that will to win is what drives me and the entire 23XI team each and every week out on the track. I love the sport of racing and the ion of our fans, but the way NASCAR is run today is unfair to teams, drivers, sponsors, and fans."

The legal action comes at a time when NASCAR recently signed a new $7.7 billion media deal with major networks and streaming platforms, including Fox, NBC, Amazon, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Despite this financial boost for the organization, the plaintiffs assert that team owners continue to struggle under the current system.

As legal proceedings unfold, Jordan and his 23XI Racing team have remained dedicated to providing hurricane relief in North Carolina.

They recently made a $1 million donation to aid recovery efforts, split between Second Harvest of Metrolina and the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund.

"Our hearts go out to everyone suffering from Hurricane Helene's devastation," Jordan said.

"23XI Racing and I are honored to the NC Disaster Relief Fund and Second Harvest of Metrolina as they help rebuild lives, restore hope, and ensure that those affected receive the assistance they need."

In addition to financial contributions, the team has opened its Huntersville facility to accept hurricane relief donations, offering a list of essential items needed for those impacted by the storm.
