Pop Isaacs of Texas Tech accused of sexually assaulting a minor

The Texas Tech University men's basketball team is facing controversy as Pop Isaacs, a starting guard, has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor during the team's November trip to the Bahamas.

The civil lawsuit, filed in Lubbock County District Court, alleges that Isaacs engaged in unconsented physical, offensive, and sexual with a 17-year-old girl.

Despite the age of consent in the Bahamas being 16, the lawsuit, reportedly filed by the girl's parents, asserts that the girl was "intoxicated" and therefore unable to provide consent. The legal documents claim that Isaacs intentionally, knowingly, and recklessly committed the alleged assault while the team was participating in the Battle 4 Atlantis on Paradise Island.

What is the nature of the lawsuit?

Whilst not a criminal case, the lawsuit is seeking $1 million in damages and suggests that a Texas Tech booster bought alcoholic beverages for Isaacs and a teammate who were in a room with two underage girls, aged 17 and 16. Isaacs, 20, and the 17-year-old girl allegedly went into another room where she attempted to resist his advances.

The girl's parents ed Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland on December 14, who promptly reported the incident to university officials, including athletic director Kirby Hocutt.

The university's Title IX office has initiated an independent investigation into the matter and pledged to follow its process to completion, irrespective of the ongoing civil lawsuit seeking damages.

In response to the allegations, Texas Tech issued a statement affirming that they had ed the Title IX office twice, and based on the information available, Isaacs remains in good standing with no reason to withhold him from university activities, including basketball competition. The university emphasized its commitment to the investigative process, signaling a determination to address the allegations thoroughly.
