Caleb Williams is poised to become the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, widely regarded as a potential generational talent. However, analysts are scrutinizing his profile for any weaknesses.
During an appearance on This is Football, ESPN's Greg McElroy discussed Williams with Kevin Clark, highlighting that the young quarterback has not yet faced the kind of public adversity that can define players like Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. McElroy questioned whether Williams possesses the same motivational fire to prove doubters wrong.
Responding to a social media post sharing McElroy's comments, Williams pointed out instances of adversity he has faced throughout his college career.
"Let's go back to school again cause I'm bored [right now]," Williams wrote.
"Adversity: 'A state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune.'
"Y1. Didn't start freshman year. Y2. Popped hammy championship game 1st Q. Lost bc of my hammy. Y3. 7-5 my last year of college ball."
Why is Williams coming in for such criticism?
McElroy acknowledged USC's lackluster 2023 season, absolving Williams of blame, given his significant contributions with 41 touchdowns that year.
In discussing the mentality required for top-level success, McElroy emphasized the importance of mental toughness alongside physical talent. Despite concerns, McElroy suggested that the Chicago Bears should select Williams with the No. 1 pick, highlighting the risk of ing on a potential superstar.
"I think that's the challenge when you have a guy that does have this many God-given gifts," McElroy said. "You have to take him, and you just hope that the mental makeup is there alongside the physical makeup."
There had been a media storm caused by the fact Williams turned up to a combine press conference wearing pink nail polish, which caused people to question whether he will be able to fit into the NFL.
Others, though, say this is an irrelevance and his play will earn him respect or criticism from his teammates, not what he wears or how he looks.
