During LSU's Mach Madness 94-87 loss against Iowa, it was impossible for guard Hailey Van Lith to stop Hawkeyes' legend Caitlin Clark. During that evening, Clark finished the game with an impressive 41 points in 40 minutes that is already considered a historic performance. Clark also added four rebounds and two assists to her personal stat line. But Van Lith's poor defending was evident almost from the start of the game and people are confused to why coach Kim Mulkey didn't make the necessary changes in order to guard Clark better. Instead, the coach decided to keep Van Lith on Caitlin during the entire four quarters. This decision resulted in the Tigers getting eliminated.
Flau'jae Johnson defends Hailey Van Lith
Amid this performance and the controversy it generated, Hailey Van Lith decided to leave LSU and continue her college career at TCU. The guard annnounced her exit from Iowa last Friday. With her exit still fresh, teammate Flau'jae Johnson was at 'The Baller Aler Show' podcast. She was asked details about the game plan but she refused to lean towards a certain position on the matter. At a certain moment, the show's hosts started praising Caitling Clark's sharp-shooting display she had during that game with Van Lith guarding her. with this response, Johnson proved she is a good teammate and also a good team player. She never wanted to throw anybody under the bus and she managed to avoid that.
This is what Johnson said during the podcast episode: "You could not guard that girl for 40 minutes. But she stepped up for the challenge at the end of the day. I had to follow the scouting report. Interview over! I'm out of here! Listen, I had to follow the counting report. I talked to my coach after, after we went over it - because we go over the scouting report the night before. For me, it was just like being a ive teammate ... I thought about it, and I was like, I just gotta trust the game plan."
