The Colorado Buffaloes football team is gearing up for its second season under head coach Deion Sanders -- and expectations are high as the Buffaloes move back to the Big 12 Conference for 2024.
Last season, Sanders oversaw a program rebuild that took Colorado from one win in 2022 to four wins in 2023, all while weaponizing the transfer portal and letting dozens of players leave the team. The Buffs are hoping to take another jump this season -- and Coach Prime will not be pleased that the oddsmakers aren't on his side yet.
Colorado opens as an underdog to a fierce rival
Early odds indicate that Colorado is an underdog in its four most important games of the season -- beginning with its September matchup against the rival Nebraska Cornhuskers. Even though the Buffs won this game 36-14 a season ago, the Huskers have opened as five-point favorites at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb on Sept. 7.
The oddsmakers don't like Colorado's chances against Kansas State in October, as the Wildcats are currently 6.5-point favorites. In November, Colorado will play the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road, and the Buffs are poised to enter that game as six-point underdogs. Two weeks later, on Nov. 23, the Kansas Jayhawks will host Colorado at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City -- they are currently five-point favorites to win.
While Coach Prime could grovel about the odds, he is more likely to use them as motivation for his team. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders -- the coach's son -- could use these games as a platform to boost his Heisman Trophy and 2025 NFL Draft candidacy. Lots can change between now and November, and it remains to be seen how much inspiration Colorado will take from the bookmakers.
