- NCAA. Shedeur Sanders could benefit massively from the Cowboys' contract standoff with Dak Prescott
- NCAA. Shedeur Sanders has had enough and sets the record straight on his NFL future
If you've watched any New York Giants preseason action, you'll know that starting quarterback Daniel Jones -- fresh off neck and knee injuries that cost him most of the 2023 NFL season -- has been struggling a fair amount for Big Blue. Entering a season in which the Giants will hope to return to the playoffs, Jones does not yet appear to be back to 2022 "peak" form -- leading to renewed speculation that New York will soon need to pivot to a new quarterback of the future.
The potential good news for the Giants is that the franchise has a potential "out" on Jones' onerous four-year contract following the 2024 season. After paying Jones $82 million guaranteed out of the $160 million total he could earn, the Giants could look to the draft to select the former top-ten pick's replacement. Speculation to that effect will not make Deion Sanders -- the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes and a former Dallas Cowboys star -- all that happy, as he tries to keep his players focused.
Shedeur to ...the Giants?
After Jones' nightmarish two-interception display in Saturday's preseason loss to the Houston Texans, Giants and NFL fans on social media almost immediately began calling for New York to prioritize Shedeur Sanders with their first-round pick in the 2025 draft -- which would signal a major shift for the franchise and potentially the balance of power in the NFC East.
If the Giants are as bad as many fans and analysts already seem to think they will be, New York will probably be looking for a new coach -- and possibly a new general manager -- in 2025. A new brain trust typically wants to select its own quarterback to mold into a starter, and Shedeur -- expected to contend for the Heisman Trophy as the best player in NCAA football this coming season -- could enter the draft as the top signal-caller available if he leads Colorado to a big season.
Expectant fans will get their first look at Shedeur on Aug. 29, when Colorado hosts North Dakota State at Folsom Field to begin the 2024 season. Deion's son is looking to guide the Buffs to a much better win-loss record than their 4-8 campaign in 2023 -- and the team will have a chip on its shoulder after missing out on a preseason top-25 ranking.
