How did Deion Sanders' decision to over $500,000 dollars rescue his sports career as the Hall of Famer forged a path as a multi-sport athlete by competing in the NFL as well as in the MLB?
The ex-cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys went on to win two Super Bowl titles between 1985-1989 before switching to professional baseball to pen a deal with the New York Yankees where he batted .263 for 39 home runs between 1989-2001.
His decision, and achievements, are a very rare thing to accomplish and he was so dedicated to showing off that he could do both that he even aimed to play a professional football and professional baseball game on the same day.
And as sponsors, Nike wanted to offer $250,000 whilst British Knights offered an astonishing $750,000 in a major contract to hire his services. This is where Sanders ed up half a million dollars as he chose to pen a deal with Nike instead, but why?
Part of his condition with Nike was that his deal would exponentially grow if he continued to play both sports whilst the British Knight's deal was a flat rate, as per Tyler Webb, meaning it became an obvious financial decision for Sanders' ambitions.
The choice could also be connected to a potential rivalry with Bo Jackson, as ex-Los Angeles Raider also competed in the NFL and MLB at the same time and became the only player to be voted as an All-Star in two sports.
Either way, it worked out for the now-58-year-old as it didn't take long for Nike to tear his contract up in order to offer a seven-figure deal plus various other bonuses and clauses after just half a year.
Who do the Colorado Buffaloes play next?
The Colorado Buffaloes are currently under the guidance of Sanders as Coach Prime continues to rejuvenate football in the region with the Buffaloes racing into a 4-1 record through five games of the NCAA season.
They will next take on the Kansas State Wildcats at Folsom Field live on ESPN on October 12, with the game kicking off at 2:15 ET/19:15 PT.
