The LSU Tigers continued their winning start to the 2024/25 NCAA Women's Basketball season with a comfortable 74-60 victory over the Murray State Racers but their head coach was left unimpressed as she launches an inquest.
Now 4-0 for the season, the LSU triumphed in Baton Rouge with a strong second half of the match following a dismal second quarter when they suffered a 20-point deficit to the visitors to go into the break 46-37 down.
And for Kim Mulkey, she itted that there were too many gaps in the Tigers' performance as they continue into their post-Angel Reese era as she takes the blame for the off-color showing on their home patch.
"I'm going to look at me first," Mulkey told reporters at a press conference. "They got to a lot of loose balls, I think they got more rebounds than we did.
"When I look back, and I'm going to have to look at the film to be exactly right, our bench got us the lead in the first quarter. So why didn't I leave them in there as a coach? Might be on me."
Mulkey reevaluating her options
It's a sign of good leadership for a head coach to be willing to it when they got it wrong and to review their processes and make the necessary changes and that's exactly what the 62-year-old is going to do.
She warned her established stars that whilst they are the ones she generally has the most confidence in, they were not the ones who won the contest, as she threatens to create some serious displacement within her starting five.
"You usually go with kids that have been in your system that you have the most confidence in," Mulkey added. "But the truth of the matter is, at the end of the first quarter, who got us the lead? It wasn't those kids that have been in the system."
