Notre Dame and Georgia are set for a high-stakes clash in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the 2025 Sugar Bowl. The game was originally scheduled for this Wednesday, January 1, 2025. However, it was decided to postponed following the vehicle attack that killed 10 people during New Year's Eve celebrations on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
This year's Sugar Bowl doubles as a CFP Quarterfinal, marking the fifth time the bowl has been part of the playoff format since its inception in 2014. Sugar Bowl Committee President Walter Becker shared his excitement: "We are thrilled to host two schools that have created so many great Sugar Bowl memories in their distinguished histories. Notre Dame's Road to the Sugar Bowl
The Fighting Irish, the No. 7 seed, secured their spot with a decisive 27-17 victory over Indiana in the playoff's first-ever First-Round Game. Under head coach Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame boasts a 12-1 record, making this their fifth Sugar Bowl appearance and their first since 2007. Georgia's Playoff Pedigree
The No. 2 seed Georgia Bulldogs, fresh off their SEC Championship win-a dramatic 22-19 overtime victory against Texas-earned a first-round bye. With an 11-2 record under head coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs are making their 12th Sugar Bowl appearance. Reflecting on the matchup, Jeff Hundley, CEO of the Sugar Bowl, said, "This year's game features two of college football's elite. Georgia and Notre Dame have both realized historic moments with the Bowl... Now we get a tremendous rematch."
Historic rivalry rekindled
This will be only the fourth meeting between these storied programs, with Georgia holding a perfect 3-0 record against Notre Dame. Their first encounter, the 1981 Sugar Bowl, saw Georgia secure a national championship. Now, over four decades later, these teams meet again with championship aspirations on the line.
The stakes are sky-high, as the winner advances to the CFP Semifinal at the Orange Bowl, inching closer to the National Championship on Monday, January 20, in Atlanta.
