The College Football Playoff (CFP) has transformed college football since its introduction in 2014, creating a new era of competition that has replaced the controversies of past systems like the BCS.
Unlike the BCS, which relied on polls and computer rankings to determine the top two teams, the CFP uses a selection committee to rank teams and crown a champion through a multi-round playoff format.

Which school has the most CFP National Championship appearances?
Over its history, 21 teams have competed in the CFP, but only a select few have consistently dominated the field.
Among them, Alabama leads the way with eight playoff appearances.
The Crimson Tide have been a near-constant presence, qualifying in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2023.
Their success extends beyond appearances, as they've played in 14 CFP games and claimed three national titles (2015, 2017, and 2020).
Clemson isn't far behind, with seven appearances.
The Tigers made consecutive runs from 2015 to 2020 and returned in 2024 under the expanded playoff format.
Clemson has played in 10 CFP games and won two national championships (2016 and 2018).
Ohio State stands out as the third-most frequent participant, with six playoff berths.
The Buckeyes won the inaugural CFP title in 2014 and have remained competitive, making appearances in 2016, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2024.
They've competed in seven CFP games, securing their place among the elite.
Georgia and Oklahoma round out the top five in appearances, with four each.
Georgia, however, has seen greater postseason success, capturing back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022.
In the most recent 2024 season, the CFP expanded from four to 12 teams, introducing new faces like Penn State, Arizona State, and Boise State.
Despite this expansion, traditional powerhouses like Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State remain the standard-bearers of the playoff era.
As the CFP continues to grow, these teams' dominance underscores the excitement and unpredictability that has come to define college football's most thrilling postseason.
