In the midst of an exhilarating run to the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship Game, Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua has reiterated the university's steadfast commitment to maintaining its independent status in football. Despite the evolving landscape of college football, Bevacqua emphasized that Notre Dame's independence remains a cornerstone of its identity and strategic advantage.

"No secret, the expansion of the CFP from four to 12 teams has helped enormously, because as an independent, as with other schools, we get better opportunities, better percentages of getting in the playoffs, and the more you knock on that national championship door, the better," Bevacqua told ESPN.

"And we like the freedom, quite frankly, it gives us," he added. Notre Dame's independence is not just a matter of tradition, but also of strategic flexibility that allows them to get those benefits he mentioned unlike other schools, although there is a model to follow.

Pete Bevacqua pointed to the freedom to schedule high-profile games, such as the iconic Shamrock Series against Army at Yankee Stadium and the annual showdown with USC. These marquee matchups not only boost the program's national visibility but also offer unique experiences for players and fans alike.

Financial considerations also play a significant role in Notre Dame's decision. Unlike conference-d teams, Notre Dame retains all its CFP revenue, an arrangement that proved lucrative this season with an aggregate $20 million earned for reaching the national championship game.

Despite some voices in the college football community, like Penn State head coach James Franklin, advocating for universal conference affiliation, Bevacqua remains confident that Notre Dame's independent status is a vital asset. As Notre Dame continues its quest for a national title, the decision to uphold its independent status underscores a commitment to tradition, strategic flexibility, and financial prudence.
