- NCAA. Olivia Dunne concerned for the future of competitive gymnastics
The LSU gymnastics team started the season with one goal in mind: winning another NCAA championship. However, their journey has been anything but smooth. From injuries to key athletes to a recent upset loss, the Tigers have had to battle through adversity.
On January 24, LSU faced Arkansas in their first SEC road meet of the season. Despite entering the competition as the No. 2 team in the country, the Tigers fell short, losing 196.875 to 196.600.
Freshman standout Kailin Chio delivered an impressive 9.950 on vault, and Konnor McClain led LSU's bar rotation with a 9.925. Olivia Dunne, known for her strong performances on bars, stepped into the floor lineup and scored a 9.700, while Haleigh Bryant made her floor debut with a 9.875. But despite solid individual routines, the Tigers struggled to put together a complete performance, particularly on beam, where they lost valuable points.
This defeat ended LSU's winning streak, but the team remains determined to bounce back as they prepare to face Missouri on January 31.
Key injuries impact LSU's performance
Injuries have played a major role in LSU's early-season struggles. Assistant Coach Garrett Griffeth recently provided updates on several key gymnasts:
- Haleigh Bryant is working toward returning on vault after straining her UCL in December. She has already competed on floor and beam and is making progress.
- KJ Johnson suffered an ankle injury earlier in the season but is expected to be ready for vault soon.
- Kaliya Lincoln has been practicing full floor routines on the rod floor and hopes to transition to the spring floor in the coming weeks.
With several gymnasts on the mend, LSU is optimistic about regaining full strength. Their meet against Missouri will be an opportunity to prove they can overcome adversity and stay on track for a championship run.
As the season unfolds, LSU's depth and resilience will be tested. If their key athletes can return to full competition, the Tigers could still be one of the top contenders for the NCAA title.
