- NCAA. Deion Sanders clashes with Browns as they eye Shedeur despite strong conditions on mismanaged franchises
There is only one game left in the NFL season: Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, a rematch of their February showdown two years ago, which the Chiefs won 38-35. Kansas City's 52 wins since 2021 are the most in the NFL, followed by the Eagles' 49, highlighting the dominance of both teams in recent years. Much of their success comes from excellent draft picks and smart free agency decisions, knowing when to sign players and when to let them go. In fact, something historic stands out: of the 10 players drafted by the Chiefs in 2022, nine are still with the team, and those nine have never experienced an NFL season without a Super Bowl appearance - meaning they've never lost a playoff game.
Once the season ends, we'll enter the annual months-long drought without football until the season kicks off again on September 4. However, there will be key events in the coming months, starting with the start of free agency on March 12, that will give teams a clearer perspective before the NFL Draft on April 24. This is especially true for the teams holding the top picks (Titans, Browns, Giants), all of whom are in need of a quarterback. But with only two outstanding prospects - Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders - one of those teams may have to turn to free agency, where options like Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, or possibly Kirk Cousins, who, most notably, has a lot to do with who will win the Super Bowl, will be available.
Deion Changes His Point of View
Deion Sanders, like any concerned father, has made it clear that he wants Shedeur to land in the most ideal situation possible. He previously hinted that he might influence where his son plays, stating that he wouldn't allow Shedeur to certain teams. By "ideal," he means a well-run franchise with a strong track record of developing rookie quarterbacks, which would seem to rule out the Browns. However, it appears Deion has changed his stance after liking an Instagram post that mentioned Browns GM Andrew Berry, who claimed Deion wouldn't have a problem with Shedeur going to Cleveland.
Deion made his earlier comments before Cam Ward became the frontrunner for the first overall pick, likely going to the Titans. Now, it appears that Deion doesn't want his son's draft stock to drop. One thing's for sure, while the Browns don't have a bad roster or head coach, their troubled history with quarterbacks would certainly concern Deion. To put things in perspective, Cleveland has started 40 different quarterbacks since the franchise returned in 1999 - the most in the league. The Bears are next with 30. Only two quarterbacks have played a full season for the Browns: Tim Couch in 2001 and Baker Mayfield twice (2019 and 2020). In 11 seasons, the team has started at least three quarterbacks, making it far from an ideal destination for Shedeur or any young QB.
Where Will Shedeur Land?
Right now, it seems inevitable that the Titans will draft Ward with the first overall pick, assuming they don't sign a quarterback in free agency. That leaves the Browns as the next team in line for Shedeur. But if they don't take him - or if Deion prevents it - the Giants would likely be his destination. Shedeur even dropped some hints after the East-West Shrine Bowl, where his brother, Shilo, who is also entering the NFL next season, played. Shedeur mentioned that he would be playing against the Cowboys very soon. Since the Giants play Dallas twice a year, this strongly suggests that New York is where he wants to be.
